I don’t know about you but our internet bill went up 50%. And our health insurance jumped. And the car insurance increased by so much that my beyond-frugal husband switched it that night. My stomach and emotions would also like … Continue reading →

“At the center of / all my sorrows / I have felt a presence / that was not mine alone.” Susan Griffin
Thankful for this book I’m reading, this newfound colleague and the address she bravely gave to a very privileged and white space we both recently found ourselves in. In her prophetic message demonstrating the alliances between healthcare workplace norms and white supremacy, she stated that once she saw it, she couldn’t unsee it. As a minority in many ways in that uncomfortable room, her leadership and humility provided such relief to me.

Movement today to catch up with the overdrive thoughts—it seemed like a good time for the first run of the year. Much is not as it should be, less within my control. But some of what’s in my control is not as it should be. Over and over I commit: do the next right thing, follow goodness, remember compassion, celebrate anything you possibly can. I try and settle into the pace, pounding the sidewalks of my foreign neighborhood, looking for wonder through the sweat. Not knowing exactly how far I’ll last, and how far I’ve already gone, I run in order to stay, to make my peace with what is and be.
Agency can be a tricky thing. Maintaining a sense of agency is a key asset in adaptive coping. An inflated sense creates dissonance and magical thinking. And a deflated sense propels the undertow of the external problems. To some degree, we are co-creators of our own circumstances. We may very well not have control over important realities AND we do have control over other important realities.
Words and blurry pictures cannot do this evening and the sincerity and beauty of their love justice. Christina and Lorelei are forces of goodness and growth and we are so lucky to be in their universe. Their wedding was so them, so intentional and so fun.
